Free Kids Dental
As of Jan 1st, 2014, the Medicare Teen Dental Plan has been replaced by the Free Kids Dental Scheme. Under the scheme, a child or teenager’s eligibility is assessed at the beginning of a calendar year and remains valid for the duration of that year. From 2014, child benefits for basic dental treatments are capped at $1,000 per child over two calendar years.
If you do not use the entire $1,000 during the first year of eligibility, it can be used during the second year, provided you are still eligible. Any remaining balance will not be carried over at the end of the second calendar year. Benefits cover the majority of basic dental services, including: x-rays, examinations, cleaning, fissure sealing, fillings, root canals and extractions.
Benefits are not available for Orthodontic or Cosmetic dental work and cannot be used for any services provided in a hospital.
To confirm your child’s eligibility and check their balance by accessing your Medicare online account at: myGov or by calling Medicare’s General Enquiries Line on: 132 011.
When making an appointment for your child, let us know if your child is eligible for the Free Kids Dental Scheme. During the appointment, the dentist will discuss your child’s treatment and detail any associated costs before providing the services. Following this, you will be asked to sign a consent form for the treatment.
